Tokushima Grand Hotel Kairakuen: a ryokan-style hotel at the foot of Mt. Bizan

I stayed at Tokushima Grand Hotel Kairakuen, which advertises itself as a 'ryokan-style hotel, rare in the city center,' and is a good choice for lodging when you visit Tokushima for events such as the Awa Odori dance or Machi★Asobi. Although it is a little far from the JR station, it has spacious Japanese-style rooms and is a relaxing place to stay even for a long stay.

Update: The business closed in 2022.

The address is 1-8 Igacho, Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture.

From the outside it looks like this, it's a pretty big hotel.

There was

an Awa Odori collaboration poster on the wall inside the elevator.

There are three types of rooms: Western-style rooms, Western-style Japanese-style rooms, and Japanese-style rooms. This time I stayed in a Japanese-style room. Therefore, you have to take off your shoes before entering the room.

The entrance to the room looks like this.

When you open the sliding door...

The floor was already prepared.

Since it is a Japanese-style room, there is a low table and cushions instead of a table.

There is also a chair in the closet.

Air conditioning on the wall.

There is a safe, kettle, TV and telephone.

Since it is a Japanese-style room, it also has a tokonoma alcove.

There is a sofa set facing each other on the wide veranda by the window.

The yukata and towels are in a chest of drawers on the veranda.

On the other side is a dressing table and a refrigerator.

The toilet and bathroom are outside the living room. The glass door at the back is the bathroom, the bright area in front of that is the washroom, and the door in front is the toilet.

The toilet is a bit small.

Equipped with a heated toilet seat.

The sink looks like this, and the hair dryer is placed here.

In business hotels, the baths in your room are often available for free use 24 hours a day, but here the baths are only available from 6am to 9am and 5pm to 11pm, so be careful.

Shower and...

There is a bathtub, but there is also a large bath with semi-natural radium hot spring water, so we recommend using that if you want to relax.

There is a free parking lot with 40 spaces, so even though it is a little far from JR Tokushima Station, it shouldn't be too much of a problem for those who come by car. Even though it was peak season, I was able to stay for just under 8,000 yen per person per night, which was very helpful.
